Alexander Haywood | Return on Art

Alexander Haywood

British, 1992

Instagram Website

Bio

Alexander Haywood graduated from The University of Edinburgh with a degree in Painting. His practice explores the boundaries between the real and the imagined by infusing the outer – the landscape – with subjective inner perception.

His paintings reflect emotions and subtle states of consciousness, revealing both what is unique to his own psyche and universal to the human condition. Whether it is through his use of perspective, attention to detail, or emotive expression, the artist aims to create an intimate and immersive experience in order to dissolve the separation between subject and object, the image and the viewer.

With cinematic compositions capturing nature’s vastness and diversity, his work illuminates the value of reestablishing a more harmonious relationship with the natural world through a sense of awe.

Haywood’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. After residing in Berlin for several years, the artist now works at Limehouse Studios in East London.

Alessio Mazzarulli | Return on Art

Alessio Mazzarulli

Italian, 1974

Instagram Website

Bio

In his work, Italian artist Alessio Mazzarulli addresses the passage of time. Shredding and recycling the paper that he comes across in daily life: bills, receipts, invoices, business plans and magazines, he creates thickly layered artworks that show a distorted glimpse of the past. A faded memory, eroded by time, the details of a face, almost forgotten – he captures these moments and incorporates them into his work to create a testimony of human existence.

“I like to find new ways, new paths, new techniques, new materials, and use them to convey a message.”

Alessio Mazzarulli currently lives and works in Francavilla al mare, Italy.

Ai Kijima | Return on Art

Ai Kijima

Japanese, 1970

Bio

Ai Kijima’s pop art-inspired works feature cartoon characters collaged into layered quilts, which can be interpreted as both safety blankets and menacing meditations on global culture.

Born in Japan and based in New York, Kijima begins each piece by searching through her extensive trove of textile scraps cut from bed sheets or curtains designed for children. The artist then sews the fabric pieces into kaleidoscopic quilts brimming with energy and visual information.

The collaged images fail to form a linear narrative but rather create a snapshot of juvenilia from different parts of the world. Kijima’s arrangements augment existing characteristics of the images, exaggerating the codes of gender, nationality, and violence that are laced into cartoons by their corporate authors.

Adam Riches | Return on Art

Adam Riches

British, 1983

Instagram

Bio

Adam Riches is an emerging British painter and draughtsman who primarily works in a monochromatic color palette. The characteristically stylized portrait and figurative works he creates are based on a sensitive response to the human condition, ranging from furious expressive moments to poignant, melancholy reflections.

Using both pen on paper and oil on canvas, Riches’ explores the human psyche and delves into the effects of current social and political issues upon individuals, as well as their behavior to one another. The artist is especially interested in people’s frailties and their fallibility – in particular, their potential for extreme behaviour.

For the most part, people show the outward appearance of order and civility but underneath that exterior there’s usually something far more interesting happening.

Riches has taken part in numerous international exhibitions and artistic residencies. Recently, he was featured in an interview on the BBC news website and his works can be found in private collections around the world. The artist currently lives and works in Ipswich, England.

Vladyslav Prozorenko and Diana Tarhonii are both interior designers and contemporary artists. Together, they graduated from the Kiev University of Culture and Arts in 2018 with a specialization in environmental design.

Born in different parts of Ukraine, each began their creative journey from early childhood. During his teenage years, Vladislav preferred watercolours, portraits, and sketches, while at that same time, Diana immersed herself in capturing the Ukrainian landscapes with gouache and acrylics.

After meeting at university, Vladislav and Diana decided to merge their creative practices under the name Prozzorrr. Over the course of 6 years, they made many successful and less successful attempts to implement their varied creative ideas. As designers they always strive to create something modern and stylish, but most importantly: unique. This prompted Vladislav to come up with a new technique to create captivating compositions in wood. After completing the first piece it was clear that this was exactly what they had been searching for.

“During this time we realized that these paintings were not just our hobby, but a part of our soul. A part that we would like to share with others.”

Over the past year, the artists have been perfecting the art of creating compositions out of different wooden particles and letters. All pieces are painted by hand, and each work has a different arrangement of letters as well as a secret cube that makes it unique.

Vladyslav Prozorenko and Diana Tarhonii live and work in Kiev, Ukraine.

Daniel Freaker | Return on Art

Daniel Freaker

British, 1977

Instagram

Bio

Daniel Freaker received his MFA from the Slade School of Art in London, where he explored the painterly qualities of print, video, film and photography.

His exceptionally vibrant paintings are reminiscent of movie scenes – they seem to be mere fragments of a broader narrative. Occupying a space between the abstract and the figurative, the way in which the paint is applied to the canvas is equally important to the subject matter of the work. Some details are clearly defined where others are more of a suggestive gesture. This makes for a rich tapestry of interwoven processes which add a complex textural quality to the artwork. With this multiplicity of techniques the artist aims to evoke a certain sense of nostalgia about moments that were both beautiful and painful.

His subjects are often individuals, couples, or groups of people, addressing topics of relationships and isolation. The scenes depicted may remind us of personal experiences, while the techniques and radiant colours evoke a sense of longing for warmth. Distortions in the work seem to amplify the feelings the artist aims to evoke: connection, loss, vulnerability, or loneliness. This constant search for juxtaposition between vibrance and darkness, accident and intention, order and chaos, is what makes Freaker’s work memorable.

Daniel Freaker’s work has evolved through artistic collaborations, working with charities, and exhibiting and lecturing throughout the U.K. as well as internationally, including at the British Museum in London, Dae Won University in Korea, and The Meera Gallery in Pune, India. The artist currently lives and works in Portsmouth, UK.
